Botrylloides leachi

More Sea Squirts
Under Langstone Bridge

Hera are some examples of colonial sea squirts. The individual animals, or zooids, grow together in groups. They each have their own entry syphon, but share a larger common exit syphon.
On the right is Botrylloides leachi growing on rubble. It may be present throughout the year, but is most obvious in summer.

On the left is a common species, Star sea squirt or Star Ascidian Botryllus schlosseri, growing on an old piece of seaweed.
This species can appear in many combinations of colours, and here it has adopted two different patterns each side of a partial break in the seaweed. On the right is a close-up picture of the same species nearby.
